everyone just wants
04:48

though it's true we've come through imperfectly
and thin strings are holding up parts of everything
i still think there's some room for certainty
invisible and hard to keep and troubling it may be
so pick a hand and draw it close and clasp it strong
fill up with hopefulness the space between your palms
repeat: this one is a good one, this one is mine
you're best to not leave them behind while there's still time, because
everyone just wants to be loved
don't hurt me or trick me or twist my arm
or say fake things on big wings that fly off to the clouds
please tell me you'll keep me safe from harm
can you be the one i see from on the hilltop in the croud
all the people that you hate, they feel it too
they need to be cared for, just like you and i do
you'll see them in restaurants and grocery lines
they need someone to just be kind
everyone just wants to be loved

a bigger shape
04:44
|
|||
brightened by an old face
hope everything falls into place
there's always something left a bit undone
but i'm pretty sure if you move quick
you can find a way to make these things
fit into just an afternoon
in spite of the small space
although i've fractured my stone
indecisive in the core
i left well alone
and well it flowed forth
my urgency is gone
my hands are hanging low
on the sunlit trails we follow
and the fog of the ending of a day
is a needed protection
for the soft face of innocence
that we were all born with
and that we keep in a basement room
we remember in a quiet tune
some day
we'll go far away
the same fate
as everything
what's finished and left
will be
a palette to paint
a landscape of memories
brightened by an old face
hope everything falls into place
there's always something left a bit undone
up a bit late and i am
doin the best that i can
to fix my mindset into a bigger shape
although i've fractured my bones
fallen on the shore
i've dreamed of a lasting place
that i don't know how to look for
my inner light is weak
my fists are balled up tight
on these cold roads at twilight
brightened by an old face
hope everything falls into place
there's always something left a bit undone
up a bit late and i am
doin the best that i can
to fix my mindset
although the vines seem slow grown
although my hands are not yet cold
although we may have the things we need
although all we know is living
there's always something left a bit undone

i don't know
04:26
|
|||
finite but unpredictable waves of change are towering
finicking thin lines into your face
and the watched clocks like spring poppies flower
opening the hours a few minutes late
so sing with me if you've got time
could it hold you back from your own designs
does the very last line even have to rhyme
i don't know, i don't know, i don't know
fitting a blade into the seam of my own machine
i feel like i'm always fixing something
but my thoughts are passing boats on a long river
one directional, separate, headed downstream
stay up late if you can wait
i'm headed home in the fastest way and
hoping the distance will just fall away
but i don't know, i don't know, i don't know
waiting for quiet moments alone to fill with meaning
in crystalline spheres floating at my feet
but the visions of life i keep imagining
are never quite where i expect them to be
so let this go if you still can
accept the things you're weaker than
these rocks are better off as sand
so i'm told, so i'm told
i don't know, i don't know, i don't know

let them go
03:17
|
|||
it's not quite snowing yet
the city fills with chilled air, streets hold their breath
and a man drives home
holding tight to faded lines
remembering his childhood house and the tree they used to climb
hold your hopes in
teach them to fly then
make a promise to yourself
that even though you've held them close
when the birds fly home, you'll let them go
it's not quite decided
yet still we watch thin figures in the air evaporating
it's not quiet in the street
where the kids play, watching out for cars
until the only lights to see by are the pale moon and the washed-out stars
hold your hopes in
teach them to fly then
make a promise to yourself
that even though you've held them close
when the birds fly home, you'll let them go

on yr own
01:50
|
|||
if you want to come home first you've got to get away
leave a note, set a course, and fill up your suitcase
let the wild winds blow you any which way
it may be today's the perfect today
see, like me, you've got some things you need to figure out
just let your feet be stronger than your weariness or doubts
and everyone will ask you who was with you on the road
but some things are better on your own
so take heart and set sail
leave the damn phone turned off
when you return you can tell us all the tale
though the journey may be long, i know you will prevail
and get yourself set up by some distant mountain lake
let the cold clear water wash your troubles straight away
and though it may be difficult to face the unknown
some things are better on your own
but i'll be waiting for you when you get back home
